About First Frost

October 22 - November 5

The season of First Frost is classically a chilly one - and it may not be just the colder weather sending chills up our spines! This is the season of Halloween and All Souls’ Day - times when we are frequently reminded of death. In his poem “Ulalume,” Edgar Allen Poe writes of October as a “lonesome” month, and describes that are “ashen and sober” and leaves that are “crisped and sere.” Early November, too, seems to take on a gloomy mood as nature heads towards dormancy for the year. Yet, there is a special beauty unique to this season as well. Against the ashen gray skies, we can admire the brightness of the leaves as they turn their colors all the more. We may see mists rising in the morning that create either a sense of melancholy or perhaps - a sense of wonder. Autumn falls all around us.
